Side Effects of Not Following the Gastric Bypass Diet

When a person has undergone a gastric bypass surgery, he must follow a very strict diet. If he doesn’t follow this diet, he must suffer the consequences.
The gastric bypass diet consist of 4 phases:
- Clear liquids diet; a diet of liquids, such as water and sugar free juice.
- Puree diet; a diet of soft food that have been mashed.
- Soft but solid diet; Foods such as finely diced meats and soft fresh fruits are now allowed.
- Solid food diet; You can eat solid foods again, but be careful and make sure to keep a very slow food intake.
This gastric bypass diet has been created to help the patient become accustomed with his new stomach size, and so the stomach can safely heal. Not following this diet, will cause you to suffer from the following side effects of gastric bypass surgery.
Vomiting and nausea: When you eat foods that are not in the recommended diet, your stomach may get overwhelmed. People often are tempted to eat a small piece of cake or drink one sugary drink. This however will cause you to feel extremely nauseous and you may start to vomit excessively. This is commonly know to gastric bypass patients as dumping syndrome.
Stomach rupture: When you eat too much too quickly, there is a chance your stomach will rupture. You need to adjust to the fact that your stomach is a smaller size than it was.
Dehydration: You need to keep drinking small amounts of fluid to stay hydrated. You can’t drink more than 3 to 4 ounces at a time, but it’s crucial that you keep bottle of water handy to take a sip every now and then.
This diet was specially invented to help the patient and the stomach adjust to a new eating habit. Some patients circumvent the procedure by drinking high calorie liquids or sugary sweets. The procedure will be for naught if you can’t follow the diet, because you may actually keep gaining weight.
It is actually dangerous to not follow the diet after you have had gastric bypass surgery, for it may even result in an untimely demise.
